Visiting Hagia Sophia with Kids: A Practical Family Guide

Hagia Sophia is very doable with children — keep it to under an hour, go early, and turn it into a spot-the-detail game. The vast open hall means kids aren’t hemmed into narrow corridors, and the sheer scale of the dome tends to impress even reluctant young visitors.

Timing is everything with kids

Go right at opening (09:00) or late afternoon, when it’s coolest and least crowded — a tired child in a midday crush is nobody’s idea of fun. Keep the visit to 30–45 minutes; see how long you need for the full breakdown. There’s no need to see everything.

Make it a game

Give children specific things to find, and the building does the rest:

• The angels. Four six-winged seraphim sit high in the corners under the dome — see who spots them first.
• The Weeping Column. Let them try the wishing column — thumb in the hole, make a wish. Kids love this.
• The cats. Istanbul’s famous street cats often wander the grounds. A cat count keeps little ones moving.
